The 2 time slam winner has announced her retirement today after several reports indicated as much on China state media over the past 48 hours. The retirement has seen the curtain close on Asia’s most successful tennis career and in a sign of the times the announcement was made on social media to her 23 million + social media fan base.

The anticipated return of Li Na to court at the Wuhan Open was shut down with a withdrawal confirmation letter sent to tournament organisers which set the rumour mill in motion. Her persistent knee problems were the cause for her retirement and saw her slide in the world rankings from 2nd to 6th which was largely due to her time off court in recovery.
